Peptide Storage and Stability: A Laboratory Handling Guide

Lyophilised research peptides are stable materials when stored correctly, and degrade predictably when they are not. This guide covers what governs peptide stability in laboratory storage — temperature, light, moisture and time — and the storage durations Order Peptides UK observes for its own stock.

Order Peptides UK does not provide preparation, measurement or administration guidance under any circumstances. Solvent selection, handling and all experimental procedures are determined by the receiving laboratory under its own validated protocols and COSHH assessment.

Storing lyophilised peptides

Peptides in lyophilised (freeze-dried) form are stable in transit — the freeze-dried state protects them from moisture and UV exposure. We recommend transferring them to refrigerated or frozen storage on arrival to preserve long-term stability.

At Order Peptides UK, stock is held in temperature-controlled cold storage — a walk-in freezer and refrigerated units, continuously monitored. Sealed lyophilised vials stored at -20°C remain stable for up to 48 months. On receipt, store sealed vials in a refrigerator (2-8°C) for short-term holding or a freezer (-20°C) for extended storage, protected from light and moisture. Purpose-built storage cases are available in our Lab Supplies range.

Note on degradation: peptides degrade gradually rather than abruptly. As degradation proceeds, the molecule can lose secondary structure and charge distribution, leading to fragmentation and eventual loss of structural integrity. This is why storage temperature and elapsed time matter more than any single handling step.

To estimate how long a given peptide is likely to remain stable under different storage conditions, see our Peptide Stability & pH Calculator, which factors in peptide form, storage temperature and pH.

Storage duration guidelines

Observed stability windows by peptide class:

Type of Peptide Sealed Lyophilised Storage In Solution (2-8°C)
Basic Peptides Up to 48 months at -20°C 2 – 8 weeks
Acidic Peptides Up to 48 months at -20°C 2 – 8 weeks
Neutral Peptides Up to 48 months at -20°C 2 – 8 weeks
Hydrophobic Peptides Up to 48 months at -20°C 2 – 8 weeks
Hydrophilic Peptides Up to 48 months at -20°C 2 – 8 weeks

What affects peptide stability

  • Temperature. The single largest factor. Every reduction in storage temperature slows the hydrolysis and oxidation reactions that break peptide bonds.
  • Moisture. Lyophilised material is hygroscopic. Repeatedly moving a vial between cold storage and ambient temperature encourages condensation inside the vial, which shortens its usable life.
  • Light. Peptides containing tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine, cysteine or methionine are the most photosensitive; store all vials protected from light.
  • Sequence composition. Sequences containing asparagine, glutamine, cysteine or methionine are inherently less stable than those without, independent of how they are stored.
  • Time in solution. Peptides in solution are substantially less stable than in the sealed lyophilised state, which is why the windows in the table above differ by orders of magnitude.

Certificates of Analysis

Every batch we supply has a Certificate of Analysis recording its purity, identity and analytical data, available on each product page. Batch-specific data on the CoA takes precedence over any general guidance on this page.
